At school I was ask to make a child's birthday cake for food technology. We had to come up with a design and make sure it met the design brief. I was really stuck on a design but then I came across a cake website and found some inspiration for my cake. I decided to make a fish cake!
First I baked 12 cupcakes and one round cake. Make sure the diameter of the round cake is the same as three cupcakes lined up or a bit smaller like I have done.
Cut the round cake in half making one half bigger than the other. This will be your head and you tail. Cut a small triangle in the middle of the flat side of the bigger half, to create a tail shape.
Next it is time to ice your cakes. Dye some butter cream icing yellow. Ice the head and make the icing smooth. Ice your tail with the same icing. When icing the tail at some ridges to the icing to add some effect. I did this with a spreading knife.
With some more butter cream icing dye it pink and green. Pipe seven cupcakes green and six cup cakes pink. Feel free to change the colours of the icing if you wish.
With some fondant make some eyes, lips and eyelashes. Cut out a circle piece of fondant for the eye. Dye some fondant blue and cut out a smaller circle and place it on the bigger circle with some water. Colour some fondant pink to make the lips. I went for a heart shape and at the bottom of the heart stuck a toothpick in it, so I can attach it to the head. For the eyelashes roll out a piece of black fondant and cut into strips about 2 cm wide and 3 cm in length. Cut lines in the strips and them place on a pencil so they can curl up. Let the fondant pieces dry for two hours of even a day.
Next its time to put everything together! Place the head on a cake board. Add some icing to the bottom of the cupcakes and place them on. Next place the tail on the board. Add the lips to the head. With a bit of water add the eye and the eyelashes on the cake.
And your fishy cake is complete! For more instruction with pictures on how to make this cake visit and tutorials of other cake ideas visit My Cake School.
