On Wednesday night I attended my first cake/cupcake decorating class at Black Wood Lane with one of my family friends. I was super excited and learnt heaps of new tips.
We decorated 12 red velvet cupcakes. The cupcakes were already made for us, as was the fondant icing and the butter cream icing. We first coloured the buttercream icing two different colours. I choose pink and orange. We then place the buttercream in a piping bag, and learnt how to place it in the correct way, which is folding down the bag ridges and then placing the icing in. We all placed a 9MM tip on our piping bags. The tip is a small star shape. We were then shown how to pipe various designs with the piping tip.
I choose to use my pink butter cream icing first. With the 9MM tip we were shown how to do the design in the photo above. To do this design you pipe little stars all over the cupcake.
To achieve this design you use the same 9MM tip. You first pipe a star but the you pipe on top of the star in a clockwise direction. This creates a swirl. I covered my whole cupcake in these.
Next we placed the other buttercream that we had coloured, in another piping bag with a 1M piping tip. I piped a classic swirl with this tip. You start from the center of the cupcake and then pipe around the edge of the cupcake and pipe around toward the center.
With this tip you can also pipe a rose. I have always wanted to learn how to do this and I was so excited when we were taught how to do it. So you start in the center of the cupcake and pipe a little dot which will act as your rose bud. Then pip around the bud in an outward direction.
We then got to work with fondant. The fondant was already pre coloured. For this cupcake I rolled out the mint green fondant an used a patterned template to add the pattern to the fondant. I then cut out a lilac heart and placed it on top of the mint green fondant. I attached the heart with a ting bit of water.
With this cupcake I did the same process with the green fondant as the cupcake before but added a different pattern to the fondant. For the bow I rolled out a piece of lilac fondant and cut a straight strip from it. I then folded then end bits of the strip over so the met in the center This created the hoops for the bow. I then covered the bits were the two stripes met with another piece of fondant and attached it to the green fondant with a little bit of water.
With this cupcake I did the same process for the base of the icing, as i did for the previous cupcake but just in lilac. I then rolled 21 balls out of green fondant and then placed them around the edge of the cupcake.
I piped a rose on this cupcake but mixed the pink and the orange icing together in the piping bag. So one side of the bag had pink icing, the other orange. As you piped the coloures join together but the don't mix. I cut 'Mum' out of fondant with some letter cutter. I made one especially for my mum because I love her, and she paid for the class!
If you are interested in cake decorating I would highly recommend giving a decorating class a go because you learn and practice how to do certain things and its a whole lot of fun. I hope I have given you some helpful designs decorating tips for cupcakes.
